Kiwi Information Report

We have been learning how to write an information report. Here is mine.

Kiwi

A kiwi is a small bird that is only found in NZ. There are five species of kiwi and they are all native to NZ.

Appearance

The female kiwi is slightly bigger than the male kiwi. The kiwi has wings that are 5 cm long but they do not help them fly at all. The kiwi has brown, soft feathers. The kiwi is the size of a chicken. The kiwi has a long beak to eat the insects out of the ground. The kiwi is one of the only birds that have two nostrils at the end of their beak.

Diet

Kiwi usually eat worms, insects, spiders, berries and seeds.

Habitat

Kiwi are nocturnal animals that live on the forest floor in small burrows that are hollow.

Threats

Kiwi are killed by dogs, stoats, cats, rats and weasels. Dogs and cats think the kiwis are toys so they play

Reproduction

Kiwi only lay one egg per year. The kiwi has one of the biggest eggs in the world compared to their body size. The kiwi egg takes 80 days to hatch.

There used to be 5 million kiwi in New Zealand and now we have dropped down to about 60,000 kiwi.
